Carney back to bolster Barbarians
TODD Carney will turn back the clock when he returns to rugby league in the annual Legends of League tournament at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday.
Carney will join former teammates Chris Heighington and Terry Campese in a Barbarians side which features players with no association to the five NRL clubs competing.
Former NRL stars — including Danny Buderus, Wendell Sailor, Steve Menzies and Willie Mason — will participate in the one-day tournament.
Carney confirmed his involvement via an Instagram post.
“I can’t wait to have a run with the Barbarians and my old teammates Chris Heighington and Terry Campese, plus the legendary Matt Bowen out the back,” Carney said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to play against some of my idols growing up at the Legends of League.”
Carney’s Legends of League debut comes a week after he announced he’ll captain-coach the Byron Bay Devils next season.
Since being sacked by Cronulla in 2014 over the infamous “bubbler” incident, Carney has had stints with Catalans Dragons, Salford Red Devils and Hull KR.
Funds raised next weekend go to the Mark Hughes Foundation.
