Same rites for same-sex

Re: Andrew Hastie’s opinion piece (TST, Sept 10). The term “political correctness” is almost invariably brought out by people who want to continue expressing racist or homophobic taunting, or other hurtful opinions that are simply another form of bullying.

There are real people copping this stuff, Mr Hastie, and I’d like to see some intelligent argument without trotting out the old “political correctness” bogeyman.

Mr Hastie paints a charming picture of conventional marriage, but unfortunately it does not fit a reality that includes widespread domestic violence and child abuse.

The truth is, some legal marriages and de-facto marriages are loving and supportive, and some are hell on earth. I totally support gay people in their aspiration to be treated equally and welcomed into mainstream society through the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
