Cook’s brief tour

The Sunday Times - - YOUR SAY - SID BREEDEN City Beach

Like a starry-eyed t’othersider, Peter Gilet tries to rewrite history in favour of James Cook (Your Say, Sept 10).

Johnny-come-lately Cook in 1770 only discovered the Terra Australis east coast.

Unlike other explorers, Cook’s was a fleeting interest because he never further explored our continent and never returned.

At least 154 years before Cook, several other explorers discovered all but our east coast and in 1644 Abel Tasman charted his extensive Hollandia Nova discovery.
