Suvaljko shines in Shandale fightback

The Sunday Times - - SPORT - ROBBIE DEWAR

FORMER New Zealander Shandale burst into Inter Dominion prominence when he took out Friday night’s Group 2 JP Stratton Pace (2130m) at Gloucester Park.

After drawing barrier one, Shandale was crossed at the start by Condrieu but driver Shannon Suvaljko was off the pegs and sent his charge to the front after 500m.

Joined by the $2.10-favourite Chicago Bull with 1050m to go, the duo started to impose themselves on the race.

At the 500m Chicago Bull started to throw down the gauntlet. Shandale looked to be in trouble but fought back tenaciously to regain the ascendancy only to be tackled by Soho Tribeca.

But Shandale still wasn’t done. Suvaljko threw everything at him to prevail by a head from Soho Tribeca with Chicago Bull battling strongly in third place.
