Double shark sighting
TRIATHLON races at Rottnest Island were cut short yesterday after shark sightings yesterday.
Sufferfest Western Australia Triathlon Festival posted on Facebook that a 2m shark had been sighted off Thomson Bay just before 10am.
The Olyfest and Sprintfest races were changed to duathlons because of Surf Life Saving WA protocols, organisers said.
Earlier, Cottesloe and North Cottesloe beaches were closed after a 2.5m shark was spotted 300m offshore. It was the third time Cottesloe had been closed this week.
A spokesman for Surf Lifesaving WA said it was not known whether it was the same shark that was spotted earlier in the week.
A Fisheries spokeswoman said the Cottesloe beach closure “demonstrated the value of the Government’s multi-faceted shark mitigation strategy to help keep beach users safe and informed”.
