WEST Coast Eagles players Chris Masten and Dom Sheed have opened up about the scourge of sarcoma, a group of rare cancers both players have been touched by.

Sheed’s cousin Simon Hicks suffered sarcoma while Masten’s friend Scott Spalding has an 18-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with sarcoma, which refers to a group of more than 50 rare cancers appearing most commonly in bone or muscle tissue.

After seeing how devastating the disease can be, both Sheed and Masten signed up as ambassadors for charity Sock It To Sarcoma (SITS).

This week, they were hard at work in the South West bottling a new beer they produced in collaboration with Rocky Ridge Brewing Company, with all the profits going to SITS.

Mr Spalding, who runs a wine and beer distribution company, was inspired to help the charity after his daughter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her leg following a routine physiotherapy appointment.

Rocky Ridge owner Hamish Coates agreed to help produce a special charity beer — “Kenny Wagon Wild Zebra Stout” in honour of McKenzie, whose nickname is Kenny — with the help of Masten, who has been working with Mr Spalding with a view to a post-football career, and Sheed, who is a part-time sales rep for Rocky Road.

“I got involved with SITS after my cousin Simon got diagnosed with it. He was one of the lucky ones — they caught it early, which is the main thing when it comes to sarcoma,” Sheed said.

Masten said seeing young McKenzie battling sarcoma galvanised him to become involved in raising awareness about the disease.

Two special events to launch the new charity beer will be held at Perth’s Big Bopper Burgers on Tuesday and Wednesday night. For tickets contact the venue or sockittosar
