Hazlehurst stars in Australian drama
Mother, a one-woman play written for acclaimed, awardwinning actor Noni Hazlehurst, is a challenging but incredibly touching new work by Daniel Keene.
Performing one show only atWestSide PAC on July 7, the play is directed by former Shepparton Theatre Arts Group member Matt Scholten.
In Mother, award-winning Australian playwright Daniel Keene explores the concept of homelessness as a metaphor for disconnection.
Ms Hazlehurst plays Christie — homeless, ageing, living on the outskirts of suburbia, she attracts the curiosity of the locals with the story of her colourful, troubled life.
Christie’s story is part truth, part fiction, and even she is no longer sure which is which. Beneath her wild exaggerations and fantastic tales of loves lost and struggles overcome, there are the haunting truths that she would rather forget.
‘‘Scholten’s productions of Daniel Keene’s work have been wonderful, and I have the greatest respect for Daniel’s writing. I believe he is one of the best playwrights we have,’’ Ms Hazlehurst said.
‘‘I have wanted to do a oneperson show for many years, and am delighted that Daniel and Matt were keen to work with me to present something of substance, intelligence and heart.’’
Greater Shepparton City Council acting Riverlinks manager Jessica Watt said this was not a theatre show that most people would expect from Ms Hazlehurst.
‘‘It is dark and challenging, but ultimately brilliant.
‘‘We hope local audiences take this opportunity to see Noni doing something very different to some of her more well-known roles,’’ she said.
‘‘Delving into the signifi- cance of our primary relationships, this provocative performance will leave audiences haunted with understanding and sympathy for those living on the farthest edges of society.’’
