Four-ball at Hill Top
Ross and Lyn Kelly were sponsors of the four-ball v par event, which had a noon shotgun start on Saturday and was won by Ron Popple and Jeff Baker with a score of +10.
Popple started strongly and Baker took over in the middle holes so they were nine up after 12 holes.
It was a struggle from there with three putts on the 14th hole resulting in a loss, but a win on the 18th hole got them over the line from Bryan and Matt Miller who were runnersup on +9.
Terry White and Graham Meneilly were +8, Yerly Vasquez and Darren carter +7, Rocky and Lou Villani +4 and Bruce Gross and Bob Oliver +4. John Keller was nearestthe-pin on the sixth hole, Matt Miller on the ninth and Bob Oliver on the 14th hole.
Jan Coe and Sheryl Curran won the women’s four-ball competition with +6 and Judy Baker and Lyn Fanning were runners-up with +5. Sharon and Rebecca Jeffers scored +4 as did Lyn Flett and Sandra Harvey, to win a ball each.
Sharon Jeffers won nearest- the-pin on the third hole, Lyn Fanning won on the sixth, Rebecca Jeffers won nearestthe-pin and the jackpot on the ninth and Di Day won on the 14th.
Round three of the Goulburn Valley Division Six pennant was played atMooroopna on Sunday when the two top previously undefeated teams Hill Top and Shepparton met.
Hill Top’s core players from the previous weeks were unavailable for selection so a few of the club’s lower handicappers filled in for the day.
One issue when low handicappers play is that they need to be on their game to give strokes in the handicap division.
Gary Hopcraft was first off and played well to register a four up with three to go to win.
Dale Clarke who was acting captain for the day could not find his touch and was defeated 5/3.
At number three, themiddle spot of the team, David Rob- erts had a bad day with his golf and went down 4/3.
John Fanning was in a tight contest all day and came up to the 18th one down.
A great shot from the trees set up a chance but his par putt lipped out to enable his opponent to square the hole and maintain the one up result.
John Keller displayed his evergreen form and composure and managed a 3/2 win while giving six strokes.
Overall a 3/2 win to Shepparton which will see them clear on top of the ladder.
No doubt the regular team players will have plenty to say during the week.
Trevor Allen won Tuesday’s stroke competition with 89-18-71 and Jeff Baker was runner-up with 73.
Consolation balls went to Terry White (73) and John Freudenstein (75) and White also won nearest-the-pin.
The four-ball stableford competition on Thursday was a draw-for-partners event which was won by Bruce Gross and John Freudenstein with 43 points.
Terry White and Leo McGrath were runners-up with 42, Gary Hopcraft and Ron Popple won a ball each for their 40 points and Gary Hopcraft won another ball for nearest-the-pin.
Thursday’s Fishers Supa IGA Chook Run was won by John McCallum with 53-18-35 and Ken Hayes was runner-up with 36. Dale Clarke (361⁄ 2) and Dave Roberts (381⁄ 2) won a ball each in the rundown and Roberts won nearest-the-pin.
We cross over into July this week and Saturday’s event is monthly medal, sponsored by GMCU.
With many regular golfers heading north or west or overseas, this is an opportunity to pinch a medal while the field is thinner than usual.
So, out on the practice tees and fairways and put your best drive forward this week.
Victors: Jan Coe and Sheryl Curran with sponsor Ross Kelly after their win.
Cheers: Jeff Baker and Ron Popple celebrate with sponsor Ross Kelly.
