Fire­fight­ers sought

For­est Fire Man­age­ment Vic­to­ria has started re­cruit­ing project fire­fight­ers and new per­ma­nent for­est and fire op­er­a­tions of­fi­cers for the sea­son ahead.

Ad­ver­tis­ing started this week for project fire­fight­ers and 15 per­ma­nent for­est and fire op­er­a­tions of­fi­cers in the Hume re­gion.

‘‘Th­ese for­est fire­fight­ers are an im­por­tant ad­di­tion to our re­sources as we pre­pare for the up­com­ing fire sea­son,’’ Hume act­ing as­sis­tant chief fire of­fi­cer Shaun Lawlor said.

‘‘This fire sea­son, For­est Fire Man­age­ment Vic­to­ria will have over 1000 for­est fire­fight­ers, sup­ported by a fur­ther 2000 staff from across DELWP, Parks Vic­to­ria, Mel­bourneWater and VicForests, who have a fire role in ad­di­tion to their nor­mal du­ties.

‘‘Statewide, there are 300 project fire­fight­ers po­si­tions avail­able along with 49 new per­ma­nent for­est and fire op­er­a­tions of­fi­cer roles.’’

Project fire­fight­ers, and for­est and fire op­er­a­tions of­fi­cers, re­spond to bush­fires and other emer­gen­cies, help de­liver the planned burn­ing pro­gram and un­der­take a va­ri­ety of fire pre­pared­ness ac­tiv­i­ties, in­clud­ing road, track and fire­break main­te­nance.

They also help with the main­te­nance and im­prove­ment of for­est re­cre­ation sites, pest and weed con­trol works, and other for­est man­age­ment ac­tiv­i­ties.

Th­ese jobs will be based at De­part­ment of En­vi­ron­ment, Land, Water and Plan­ning and Parks Vic­to­ria of­fices and de­pots in re­gional Vic­to­ria.
