Merrigum golf:

The Tatura Guardian - - Sport -

Glenn and Kim of Newton’s Parcel Service put on another sensational day of golf at Merrigum on Saturday.

Along with their supportive sponsors, they provided amazing prizes and ensured nobody went home a loser, and that is saying something given the size of the field that contested the pairs ambrose event.

The amount of work put in by Kim and Glenn was evident the moment you set foot in the clubhouse, with tables full of the day’s trophies.

The course was in fantastic condition thanks to the club’s hard-working volunteers, so all golfers needed to complete the day was good weather.

After two great days of weather on Thursday and Friday, the forecast rain for Saturday threatened to derail the day. Fortunately, it did not come to fruition and the day, for the most part, remained reasonably mild.

Cory Berghofer and Clare Doherty were in hot form and easily won the day with a score of 73-13-60, a massive four shots ahead of their nearest rivals.

Berghofer is the most consistent golfer in the club at the moment, despite not playing as regularly as most, and Doherty has shown she is becoming a really good golfer.

As a team, they proved to be a formidable combination.

Runners-up were J. Kerrins and B. Kalder with 64 nett, while Simon Doherty and Zaylee Newham finished in third place with 64.75.

It was after that the logjam occurred, with little separating quite a few of the pairs.

Winners of the women’s event were Sue Turnbull and S. Curran with 76.75.

Men’s and women’s nearest the pin winners were Bill Brayand Tash Doherty (sixth), Simon and Tash Doherty (ninth), Berghofer and Sue Turnbull (12th) and Mick Mulcahy and Nicole Doherty (14th).

The longest drives were won by Brendan Spittles and Newham and the nearest second shots on the 18th were taken out by R. Stannard and Jan Christou.

Once again the Merrigum Golf Club is indebted to Glenn and Kim and Newton’s Parcel Service for the effort they both put into making the day a success, not only with trophies but with the number of visitors they attracted to the club for the day. It is very much appreciated.

Saturday’s event is par, so come along and challenge yourself.
