Now that fire re­stric­tions are in place for the North East Fire dis­trict, the Coun­try Fire Author­ity is re­mind­ing peo­ple that gas pow­ered scare guns re­quire a per­mit.

CFA op­er­a­tions of­fi­cer Peter Bell said dur­ing the de­clared Fire Danger Pe­riod there are things you can and can­not do and on days of To­tal Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally re­stricted, this in­cludes the use of gaspow­ered scare guns.

Fruit grow­ers may not be aware of the re­quire­ments to op­er­ate gas-pow­ered scare guns dur­ing the de­clared fire-danger pe­riod.

The CFA re­quires users of gaspow­ered scare guns, dur­ing the de­clared Fire Danger Pe­riod, to hold what is known as a Sched­ule 14 per­mit.

‘‘We have, in the past, had in­stances where fire has started from the use of gas-scare guns and we wish to take a proac­tive ap­proach to help peo­ple un­der- stand their obli­ga­tions and more im­por­tantly, min­imise the risk of fire and the po­ten­tial dam­age and heartache that a fire could cause,’’ duty of­fi­cer Mr Bell said.

‘‘Place­ment of the equip­ment is crit­i­cal and peo­ple need to be vig­i­lant, mak­ing sure de­vices are po­si­tioned away from long, dry grass to help lessen the chance of a fire start­ing.’’

Per­mit ap­pli­ca­tions are available on­line from the fol­low­ing link at the CFA Web­site: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warn­ingsre­stric­tions/fire-danger-pe­ri­od­per­mits/ and can be lodged di­rectly with CFA Dis­trict 22 Head­quar­ters at 205 Nu­murkah Rd, Shep­par­ton.

Per­mit ap­pli­ca­tions can be ap­plied for to cover the whole of the Fire Danger Pe­riod. It is, how­ever, worth not­ing the gaspow­ered scare guns can­not be used on days of To­tal Fire Ban.
