Teams face finals wait
Tatura’s draw with Mansfield meant the two finals aspirants — both suffering long post-season droughts — would have to wait another round to feel assured of their progress.
If the round 16 Goulburn Valley League contest was about boarding the plane to finals paradise, the pair survived an interrogation at customs and are waiting in the gate lounge.
Sitting fifth, the 9-1-6 Bulldogs have a six-point buffer to Euroa in seventh, and must win just one of their next two games — againstMooroopna and Seymour — to seal their fate.
At sixth and 8-1-7, Mansfield is far less assured of finals, two points clear of the Magpies with Seymour and Shepparton United on the menu.
Tatura has not played finals since 2014 and coach Jamason Daniels said the passion of the playing group to play finals could not be questioned.
‘‘We’re really hungry, we’ve got a really young group that’s really hungry to play finals for the first time,’’ he said.
‘‘That shows a lot and shows we care and want to win games to be there. Our mindset is right, unfortunately the execution just wasn’t there today.’’
Daniels said the desire to make the top six was not just for the senior footballers, but for the entire club.
