The Tatura Guardian - - Sport -

. Rocco Barca won Saturday’s monthly medal, sponsored by GMCU, with a round of 96-28-68 and Frank Hill was runner-up in B-grade on 69.

Steve Haigh won A-grade with 73-4-69 and John Keller was runner-up with 78-8-70 whileMatt Miller’s fine round of 72-1-71 could win him just a ball.

Other ball winners were: James Ibbotson 70, Dave Roberts 71, Dave Cornwall, Col Carlow, Garry Reese, Jody Webber and Steve Buchanan 72, Paul Berg, Brian Meneilly and Ian Raglus 73 on count back.

John Keller won nearest-the-pin on the third hole (Lewis Homes), Steve Zolich won on the sixth (Tatura Post Office), Darren Carter won the jackpot and nearest-thepin on the ninth hole (Tatura Engineering) while Ross Kelly won on the 14th which is sponsored by A-1 Freight.

Mandy McGrath showed the benefit of her recent pennantplaying experience by winning Saturday’s women’s competition with 99-33-66.

Phyl Fiddes was runner-up with 102-32-70 while Robyn Downs 72 and Pam Booth from The National Golf Club with 74 on count back each won a ball.

Booth also won nearest-the-pin on the third, Elaine Dunk on the sixth, Julie Gregg on the ninth and Robyn Downs on the 14th.

A good field, which included visitors from Rosebud, The National, Rushworth and University of Third Age caravanners, played in the four-person ambrose event sponsored by Colin Barlow.

The winners of the day were local golfers John Dellar, Scott Carter, Dylan Burls and Ryan Butler with 54.5, just scraping in in front of Dave Cornwall, Steve Zolich, Yvonne Kartner and Samantha Scheppers who were just 0.125 behind.

Samantha is one of the lowest handicapped women to play at Hill Top with a string of golfing achievements to her credit and no doubt gave her teammuch encouragement and inspiration. Nearestthe-pin trophies went to Dave Cornwall and Julie Gregg on the third hole, to John Dickinson and Julie Gregg on the sixth, to Paul Cornelius and Jill Rankin on the ninth and to Ron Popple and Sheryl Curran on the 14th.

Annual general meeting

With Hill Top steadily increasing membership and patronage at the club and in the dining room, there has been little change to the board of directors, reflecting satisfaction with the club’s direction.

Paul Newman will continue as president although Allen Gale will slot in as treasurer with Bryan Miller’s retirement from that position and Drew Curtis will replace Elaine Dunk on the committee.

Dave Cornwall will take over the captaincy from Bob Hunter with Mick Trevaskis coming in as vicecaptain.

Perhaps the highlight of the AGM was Graham Smith being honoured with life membership after decades of energetic work for the club which included a term as president.

Mid week

Ron Popple and Graham Meneilly were well clear of the field on Tuesday; Popple winning with 79-15-64 and Meneilly just a shot behind.

Alex Howson had a 70 while Trevor Allen and Bob Hunter each had a 71.

Lou Villani won a ball for his nearest-the-pin shot on the ninth. Bob Hunter played steady golf on Thursday, winning the stroke event with 86-18-68 after parring six holes on the front nine holes alone.

Joe De Ieso was runner-up with 70 on a count back from Steve Haigh and James Ibbotson who won consolation balls along with Ross Kelly and Ron Popple 71.

Bob Hunter added some cream to his win by also winning nearestthe-pin.

Coming events

When the excitement of the Melbourne Cup has died down, there is a big weekend of golf coming up with a stableford round sponsored by John Steen on Saturday, and another big ambrose competition on this Sunday.

Northlinks is sponsoring a twoperson event for men and for women (but not mixed) with the winners able to spend a weekend at the RACV Goldfields Resort at Creswick before December 31.

There is a 10.30 am assembly for an 11 am shotgun start. Entry forms may be downloaded from the Hill Top website at www.hilltopgolf or phone Geoff Lipshut on 0417 134 929.

On Monday, November 12 the GV veteran golfers will play the third round of their championships at Numurkah with Hill Top’s John Keller battling to retain his hold on the title that he has dominated in recent years.

One of the few years that he failed to win, his Hill Top golfing buddy John Fanning took the title, much to the chagrin of the bigger Goulburn Murray clubs.

Sunday winners: Scott Carter, Dylan Burls, Ryan Butler and John Dellar with sponsor Col Barlow

Well done: Hill Top president Paul Newman presents Graham Smith with his life membership.
