Ready for takeoff

The Weekend Australian - Life - - STYLE - KEN THOMPSON kenthompsonstylist@bigpond.com

For the past few years my partner and I have swung between the icily festive Christmas holiday in London and the wide blue summer skies of the staycation in Sydney. This regimen of contrasts has wedged the wardrobe from tropical seersucker shorts and flip flops one season to layers of thermal underwear and waterproof overcoats the next. I always bless myself that I was born in the jet age and you can be transposed to the other side of the world in the space of a day. A true fashion victim’s dream. This year, however, we are mixing it up and heading off to San Francisco. Still northern hemisphere but California nonetheless, and therefore a slightly more relaxed approach to winter dressing is needed. Some streamline sweatpants shall replace the long johns. Good running shoes will help to tackle the hills and a variety of blazers and semi-formal will take me from lunches on to pre-dinner drinks. Packing light has never been my forte and I think it’s nothing to be proud of. If you really love an item of clothing, throw it in, I say — unlike my partner, who is able to live and travel in a few spartan, well-cut black separates and a single Prada suit.

No wonder I am forever dialling housekeeping for extra hangers.
