The Weekend Australian - Life - - STYLE - KEN THOMPSON kthompsonstylist@bigpond.com

A spectacle wearer from the moment I turned 40 and started to read restaurant menus like I was playing a trombone, I have adopted eyewear as an integral part of my dressing routine.

I would not dream of leaving the house without my glasses. I have a selection of spectacles that traverse the spectrum of smart casual to black tie. But when it comes to gym wear, why are sunglasses the only style that seems to work?

I have tried to adopt the optical meets sports look but resemble a nerdy middle-aged cartoon character in search of a better body. Thank heavens for prescriptive multifocal sunglasses. I can now power-walk in a Kath & Kim fashion, navigate the streets and read my text messages simultaneously. Even this morning when it was pitch black outside, on went the sunglasses — the only possible face accessory as the addendum to a head-to-toe story in Nike Swoosh.

Now I just need to stop referring to the health dashboard on my phone. Just when you think you have conquered another kilometre it reveals you have taken only 20 more steps. Now, that’s an eye-opener.
