Beyond belief

What an incredibly insightful article by Sami Shah and Ishma Alvi (“Faith no more”, June 17-18). Sami talked of “grotesque misogyny”, while Ishma spoke of “venomous misogyny”. Perhaps it is time Australians had a closer look at how Islam teaches Muslim men to treat their women. The critical factor is that women are treated as fifth-class citizens. How marvellous it would be if all Australian women, Muslim and non-Muslim, showed their outrage by saying “we’re not going to put up with it any more”. It would be interesting to watch how Muslim men, and the imams in particular, react to this reformation. Chas Barter Lower Mitcham, SA Reading this article has made me even prouder to be born into the Christian faith. I am grateful to be taught about compassion, peace and love within a like-minded brotherhood of men and women across the world. I am happy that this young couple can live among us without fear.
