Art for art’s sake
I was saddened to see the fate that has befallen the legacy of Donald Friend (“Art of Darkness”, Oct 21-2). Anyone familiar with his superb diaries would know there was no more searing critic of himself as both an artist and a man than Friend himself. If works of art are to be judged as a reflection of the moral failings of their creators, the walls of our galleries and shelves of our libraries would be stripped bare. I fear that the deadening climate of opinion that bedevilled Bill Henson some years back is alive and well.
