Guilty as charged

The Weekend Australian - Magazine - - INBOX -

I have something in common with Phillip Adams in having been dishonourably discharged from the scouts (“First dybs”, May 19-20). The compulsory school hike involving two nights’ camping was on the same weekend my SANFL football team had at last made it to the semi-finals. I had an accomplice who, like me, was keen to see the game. He got us deliberately lost, so the next morning we hiked to the nearest phone booth to call the senior scoutmaster. A feigned asthma attack and we were given the all-clear to go home (to the game). Of course we didn’t factor in that there would be some teachers at the game and we were sprung. Guilty as charged and both of us were “cast into the darkness”.
