Both of your letters casting doubt on the authenticity of the discovery of Amelia Earhart’s plane engine by Australian soldiers in the jungle of New Britain in 1945 (Inbox, Aug 18-19) fail to explain one undeniable fact. How did the engine and frame identification plates they found (confirmed by the manufacturers as belonging to her plane) end up in the jungle? I would back any day David Billings’ find as being the remains of her missing plane over any other unsustainable theory. Jim Mangleson Ocean Drive, NSW
