Waste not, want not

I to­tally re­late to Robyn Wil­liams (“Mak­ing do”, Aug 25-26). I was con­di­tioned dur­ing the war when we never wasted any­thing. My mother col­lected ev­ery piece of string and paper bag. She even saved the per­fo­rated sticky paper around sheets of stamps be­cause there was no such thing as sticky tape. I col­lect the elas­tic bands from the pa­pers tossed into the yard. I can’t help it! I am ap­palled at the waste and un­nec­es­sary dis­posal of food. I am not quite as par­si­mo­nious as Mr Wil­liams, but look­ing af­ter the pen­nies al­lows me to buy the things that make my life eas­ier. Chris Phillips Tanawha, Qld
