Leatherman Limited Edition PST

WhAt is it? An objet for nostalgic, cashed-up survivalist types. hoW so? It’s a special edition Leatherman, based on the design of the original multi-tool from 1983, to mark the Oregon firm’s 35th anniversary. It costs 349 bucks! is it studded With rAre jeWels, or WhAt? Nope, it’s plain old steel. Though the iPhone-like packaging and handsome leather carrying case have a special, luxe feel.

WhAt does “Pst” stAnd for? Pocket Survival Tool. Its suite of hardware – needle-nose pliers, blade, file, can/bottle opener and screwdrivers – will give you a fighting chance if your chopper goes down in the jungle behind enemy lines. (Or you could just use it for little jobs around the house, whittling sticks and opening beers. Whatever.) Verdict: The pliers aren’t sprung, which is annoying, and the tools’ opening/closing action is unrefined. Anything else? It’s stamped with Tim Leatherman’s signature. At this price point I’d want his phone number.
