INCORPORATING symphony orchestras into contemporary music and vice versa is a tricky undertaking at the best of times. Here the culturally challenging combination of the Hilltop Hoods and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is surprisingly successful in this funky remake of the Hoods’ platinumselling album. Arranger Jamie Messenger’s imaginative ideas don’t threaten the integrity of either party, and the trio’s spluttering, jabbing street rhymes are still the main focus. Tightly meshed with the orchestra, the dark rolling commentaries and parched humour persist even within a heady brew of speech, scratches, samples and classical ensemble. Rich in detail, sleek stretchy strings are a contrasting foil for the bouncy verbal battery of What a Great Night ; and the incongruities of difference bolster ironies in the catchy strings of Recapturing the Vibe and breezy intro of The Hard Road. Jazzy sweeps from the brass add a cinematic vibe in Conversations From a Speakeasy , and the settings are colourful, well- produced and enjoyably bizarre.
