Big break: Lined up to be shot by Latvian soldiers, I saved my life by running forward and begging on one knee for bread, which amused them. Career highlight: Career? I fixed TVs for a living. Any highlight has got to be meeting my wife, Patricia, having three sons and living a normal life. Lowlight: My darkest moment in life was hiding behind a knoll and seeing my mother and siblings killed, along with everyone else from my village. Favourite writers: My son, Mark. Other pursuits: Chess ( which the soldiers taught me), horseracing ( I’m a 50c punter), football ( Collingwood, of course!). Guilty pleasures: Red Tulip liqueur chocolates and, when I can find them, Fry’s Peppermint Cream bars.
