By Ranulph Fiennes Hodder & Stoughton, 402pp, $ 35 MASTER of understatement (‘‘ I’ve never been much good at sitting around at home doing nothing’’), Ranulph Fiennes left the military rigours of Britain’s Special Air Service to become the archetypal exploreradventurer in 1980, enduring Antarctic temperatures of minus 50C and 90- knot winds; a decade later he was trekking across Arabian sands where he had earlier ‘‘ spent many days and nights ambushing Marxist soldiers’’, this time in search of the lost ancient city of Ubar. An easier life seems entirely out of the question.
