Actually, this is a documentary about how saffron, the rarest and most expensive spice in the world, is made from purple flowers in La Mancha. Each flower’s petals must be removed one by one so the fuchsia- coloured stamens can be collected. To produce 1kg of dried saffron, 250,000 flowers must be stripped this way. Tune in to find out how yellow saffron comes from purple flowers. The Art of Travel, 6.10pm, ABC Respected ‘‘ philosopher of everyday life’’ Alain de Botton brings his wonderful book The Art of Travel to the small screen. Among other things, Botton discusses the reasons why people travel, and whether or not the idea of travelling is somehow more rewarding than the journey itself. Big Cat Diary: Bella and her Cubs, 8pm, ABC Gorgeous wildlife documentary about a leopard family growing up on the banks of a river in one of the world’s wildest locations, Kenya’s Masai Mara. Breathlessly enthusiastic host Saba Douglas- Hamilton, pictured, follows the cats for eight months, though she does have a tendency to anthropomorphise. ‘‘ The cubs are still completely dependent on their mum,’’ she whispers early on. ‘‘ She’s their teacher, their playmate and their sole provider.’’ But don’t turn the sound down or you’ll miss some great African music.
