Britney’s old pad goes for a song: $ 7.5m
A prize slice of celebrity real estate is for sale in the Big Apple, Julie Earle- Levine reports
BRITNEY Spears used to live here. So did Keith Richards and after him, Russell Simmons. For those who care about celebrity’’, this Manhattan apartment ( which is really a fourstorey townhouse with a private terrace boasting views of the Empire State building) might appeal.
Not that the brokers are promoting it that way. An advertisement for the property, which is in downtown Greenwich Village, says simply that it is perfect for entertaining’’, and hints at big names.
On a tour of the 4400- square- foot ( 371.6sq m) enormous three- bedroom, 4.5- bathroom property, the broker Chris Toland only revealed who had lived there when pressed.
For some buyers it is not a selling point, rather just a fact, he says.
He paused at the apartment’s lobby area to point out that it would also make an incredible media room.
You could be sleeping downstairs and entertaining 100 people upstairs. There are two full baths, a luxurious master suite, fire places,’’ he says.
The property is indeed spectacular, with soaring views of the Empire State Building and pin- drop quiet in an otherwise noisy area, buffered by Broadway.
Another hint at ‘‘ entertainment types’’, there is a private entrance on each floor, allowing the owner, and or guests to enter the apartment that way if they choose to.
There is another entrance at the back if you need to sneak into the building. It is very private,’’ he says.
The concierge is tight- lipped, he adds. He won’t say who else lives there but it is well known that Cher used to, and once it was rumoured Tom Cruise called the building home.
Toland says this just wasn’t true. An executive from the management company who represented Cruise used to live in the building so mail for Tom came in. But that definitely had people interested.’’
So who are the likely buyers in a market where apartments above $ US5 million ($ 5.4 million) have not been snapped up as quickly as they might have even six months ago?
That market is finally feeling the effects of the slowing economy.
I think someone in the finance world or high profile will buy this apartment. It’s a penthouse. It is a downtown location with nice, open views,’’ Toland says.
We’ve had a lot of activity, but it’s definitely still available.’’
The current owners had initially offered the apartment for rent, for $ US32,000 a month before deciding to put it on the market for $ US6.95 million.
We think it is accurately priced.’’ For those shopping, here are more details in the ad: ‘‘ Entertain in Style in this Dramatic, Newly Renovated 4- Level Luxury Townhouse in the Sky. Chef’s Kitchen with Sub Zero and Viking appliances, hand- rubbed cherry cabinets and granite countertops.
Full- floor Living/ Dining Room with Wood- Burning fireplace, soaring ceilings, oversized windows and Empire State Views. Super- private Master Bedroom Suite features enormous custom- built closets, wood- burning fireplace, and two full baths with slate counters and European fixtures.’’
If other ‘‘ celebrity’’ real estate is any indication, the apartment may not be for sale for too long.
Recently in Beverly Hills, Madonna sold her 6458- square- foot mansion, which sits on 0.59 acres ( 2387sq m), for $ US15.6 million, after the home was listed for $ US17.4 million.
Madonna, had owned the property for nearly five years, after purchasing it in 2000 from actress Diane Keaton for $ US6.5 million.
The home, built in 1926 and designed by architect Wallace Neff has eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, multiple courtyards, an outdoor fireplace and dining area, a pool, formal gardens, a detached office and two guesthouses.
