Michael Palin’s New Europe, 7.30pm, Seven

The former Python begins with national day celebrations for a country that doesn’t exist: Transdniester. ‘‘ They have their own army, their own currency, but no single other country in the world recognises them,’’ Palin tells us. How Pythonesque. Then it’s on to Moldova, Romania and, yes, even nearby Transylvania gets a guernsey.

Air Crash Investigation, 8.30pm, National Geographic

Tonight a Boeing 747’ s cargo bay is on fire, and toxic clouds of smoke billow through the cabin, choking and killing passengers. Obvious re- enactments can subdue us. Perhaps this is just another episode of Lost or some new Jodie Foster vehicle. But truth comes home like a sledgehammer when relatives of passengers appear to talk about their loved ones.
