Postcards from the Centre

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Books - Ron Pretty

It is dry here: the hard rocks glare in the sun, their edges bruise us as we pass into the next room, the next desert. Above, the pelicans fly towards a lake already drying into salt and Sturt’s Desert Pea flares defiance above its grey sprawl of loose sand underneath which scorpions and snakes play hide and seek with the parched explorers who’ve paid good dollars for this tour, and now desiccated by a clinical sun stumble from one conceptual mirage to the next.
