Dickensian slice of Mumbai

David Stratton

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Film -

Eventually the story comes full circle, though in the meantime Salim, now played by Madhur Mittal, has become an employee of a powerful gangster and Latika ( Freida Pinto) has survived only by making the most painful compromises.

The film could have been a grim depiction of poverty and crime, but it becomes a crowdpleasing, feel-good entertainment; this could be criticised as sweetening the pill a little too much, since we know the reality to be so grim. But Dickens would undoubtedly have approved: after all, his stories invariably had happy endings.

Close relationship: Freida Pinto as the orphan girl Latika in Slumdog Millionaire
