Check it Out! With Dr Steve Brule

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Sunday, 10.25pm, Comedy John C. Reilly has appeared in more than 50 feature films, including Chicago (2002) and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007). In this bizarre television series he plays Dr Steve Brule, an infotainment host who seems perpetually drunk or stoned. It’s sketch comedy in the vein of Fast Forward, where the ridiculous is de rigueur, but with production values to make that show seem like a bigbudget outing from HBO. Clearly made on a shoestring, Check it Out! would give someone such as Ten Breakfast host Paul Henry nightmares if he weren’t already having them. As in Fast Forward, the program glories in segments that go spectacularly wrong, with dead air, non sequiturs and horribly mistimed and inappropriate interactions. Even the scripted product spots, long a target of satirical programs everywhere, come in for a hiding in this broad satire.
