Doctor Who

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Saturday, 7.30pm, ABC1 Last Sunday Aunty proved what a modern girl she is by whacking this debut episode of the new season up for streaming on iView just a half hour after it was shown in Britain and almost a week before its official TV debut here. The reason? To thwart pirate downloads, of course. In any case, like most of the new Doctor Who, Asylum of the Daleks is a little too smug and whimsical for its own good. Something quite final happened to me internally when I saw a Dalek of this new age serving a cup of tea to Winston Churchill in seasons gone by. How many times can the doctor vanquish the Daleks? I suppose it ages me dreadfully to admit that I used to hide behind a couch as a child in complete terror of what were then murderous, soulless creatures. All efforts in this episode, including the massed parliament of the Daleks, the Dalek PM (I kid you not) and an entire planet full of mad ones consigned to live in an asylum for eternity, fail utterly to make them menacing. However, there are some terrific surprises in store tonight for the young and newly faithful.
