Rewriting History: When Truth is the Enemy

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Friday, 9.30pm, SBS One This documentary investigates the battle of two men involved in a David and Goliath struggle for the truth with a conservative Lithuanian government. Australian academic Danny Ben-Moshe and professor of Yiddish David Katz are determined to thwart the intention of the government to obliterate a nasty page of its history from records. In World War II, Jews were killed by Lithuanian militia, independent of the Nazis. In a Europe politically divided, Lithuania is a laboratory for rewriting history, erasing inconvenient details from its past, we are told. ‘‘ History is the new tool of the far Right,’’ says Katz. With much restored footage and evidence, the two take on the government in a tussle that changes their lives.
