Top Gear

Saturday, 6.30pm, BBC Knowledge An 18th season for the world’s most enduring motoring program kicks off tonight. Irritatingly, lead presenter Jeremy Clarkson starts the show by wittering on about Top Gear taking a battering in the press without telling us what the hell he is talking about. Que? Of which particular stoush do you so self-righteously speak, you pompous windbag? ‘‘ However we have done all we possibly can to make sure this series is unaffected,’’ he says, to cheers that would make a rock god blush. This season aired in Britain in January. Let’s see. That month the team was in trouble for parking in disabled parking spots and for telling their fans to avoid India after a run-in with British PM David Cameron. Take your pick. When we finally get down to business, it’s the same old mix of one-camera, on-road car reviews, smart alec comments, wheelies in the dust and dreary bouts of motoring banter. Business as usual.
