Voices of a Generation: Ian Mckellen

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Sunday, 8.30pm, Studio Subtitled British Legends of Stage and Screen, this eight-part series profiles eight luminaries of a certain age, such as Derek Jacobi, Glenda Jackson, Michael York and Christopher Lee. Tonight it’s the turn of Ian McKellen to tiptoe through the tulips of his life, from the earliest dawnings of his desire to act to contemporary roles such as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and Magneto in the X-Men franchise. If you’re not a fan at the outset, I’d wager you will be by the program’s end. Interviews with the ever humble but utterly charming star are cleverly intercut with fascinating archival photos and footage of early adventures.
