The School: Educating Essex

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 9.35pm, SBS One I suppose it had to happen. In fact a reality-TV program about final-year high school students is probably well overdue. Did you enjoy your school days? According to this program, love them or loathe them, you never forget them. At this school in Essex, England, 660 students are in their final and most important year. Their head teacher has grand ambitions. His mantra is: ‘‘ Nobody leaves without enough qualifications to take the next step in their lives.’’ Easier said than done, mate. The children here are teenagers and therefore are expected to be emotional, excitable and a constant challenge to their teachers. So have things changed since you went to school? The series reveals what it’s like in a modern secondary school for teachers and for the kids of today at the very beginning of their adult lives. It made me want to run screaming for the exit.
