Banged Up Abroad: Colombian Kidnap

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Wednesday, 8.30pm, Nat Geo Adventure This is the true story of a German woman Reini Weigel, and Israeli man Erez Eltawil. They met when Weigel, 30, was at the end of a long trip to South America and wanted to visit the Lost City, a legendary attraction in the middle of nowhere. She was told that a minimum of five people were required for the hiking tour and waited around for some others to show up. First of these was Eltawil, 24. Eventually four others turned up and, after a few beers, they decided to do the hike the next day. After three days of hiking through the jungle, the party arrived at their destination. But it was so late they needed to stay there overnight. At 3.30am they were woken by guns in their faces and machetes at their throats. Every traveller’s nightmare was about to unfold. Dressed in military uniforms, their abductors told them that they were from the Colombian army. But some of them were wearing jeans. The new friends had been kidnapped, an everyday hazard in Colombia. What happened next was far from routine.
