Sunday Super Line-up

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Sunday, from 6.30pm, Ten Network Ten is coming in hard as the network facing oblivion. As viewers we feel let down by the channel that used to be the friendly, happy place to visit. But as they say of relationships when betrayal becomes a problem: you never really make up, just get used to the way you disappoint each other. Tonight there’s a packed program of season premieres, awardwinning dramas and comedies, plus new shows ‘‘ fast-tracked’’ (trendiest expression in TV-land this week) from the US. Season five of Merlin kicks it off. It’s darker this time around, apparently, but with the same combination of action, magic and adventure. Joyfully for fans, Modern Family returns at 7.30pm, having recently walked away with five Emmys. It’s followed by The New Normal, a comedy about two gay men who decide to rear a baby together. Tired gay tropes and overt stereotyping or outrageous new hit? We’ll see. Series two of Homeland also starts tonight and a new crime series, Vegas, set in the desert in the 1960s with Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas sheriff Ralph Lamb.
