What did Day hope to convey when using phrases such as ‘‘Mawson’s strict rationing was starving them to death’’ to describe the rational tactic of eking out available resources to give them as many chances as possible? Why is it ‘‘clear the tragedy that befell Ninnis and Mertz, and which nearly took Mawson’s own life, was largely the result of his ambition and relative inexperience’’?

To me, Day’s article is redolent of an intention to diminish Mawson rather than to clarify.
