Sun­day, 8.30pm, ABC1 If this four-part, al­most eight-hour his­tor­i­cal minis­eries some­times seems more in­com­pre­hen­si­ble than Game of Thrones, it may be be­cause it is based on the 1000-page novel of the same name by Ken Fol­lett. There are more stars in it than you can see with a tele­scope. Ian McShane of Dead­wood gets top billing, fol­lowed closely by Ru­fus Sewell ( John Adams) and Matthew Mac­fadyen ( Spooks). Even Don­ald Suther­land turns up, but doesn’t linger long, hence his rel­a­tively late place­ment in the near in­ter­minable open­ing cred­its.
