Mad Way South: The Sahara Challenge

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 8.30pm, Nat Geo Adventure In which a pair of Australian adventurers line up against two New Zealand hopefuls in a race to break the world record for crossing the Sahara desert by kite buggy. Though it’s a tad musty with age — the documentary first aired in 2009 — there’s no denying the indomitable spirit of this lovable quartet of nutcases. Their goal is to traverse the Sahara, from north to south, across an intimidating 2200km of one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet — in kite buggies. They are contraptions, a bit like windsurfer’s rigs, propelled by wind in a sail. I guess the program isn’t called Mad Way South for nothing. Each team consists of one expert and one novice and naturally there are conflicts and unexpected bonds between competitors.
