Bunheads

Monday, 7.30pm, Fox 8 What a surprise. From the appalling title and the appalling picture on the preview disc, I think I had convinced myself it would be reality fluff about hairdressing. It’s actually closer to the mood of Weeds, Hung or Six Feet Under without the dope, dicks or dead guys. It is the story of former ballerina Michelle Simms (Sutton Foster) who winds up a Las Vegas showgirl. She gets married on a whim to Hubbell Flowers (Alan Ruck), and they move back to the home he shares with his mother. Michelle measures her spontaneous marriage to Hubbell in seconds because he promptly dies, taking everything out of his mother’s name and leaving it to her. This further complicates the relationship between the two women, who end up teaching together at the mother’s ballet school. The title comes from a slang term for ballerinas who put their hair up into a bun while dancing. It’s dry, darkly funny and really kind of gorgeous to watch.
