The Filthy West

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 8.30pm, Nat Geo Adventure No offence is intended to the people of Western Australia in the title of this film about kite surfing. The ‘‘ filthy west’’ is to be taken in the same context as the ‘‘ fully sick’’ waves that roll into the beaches there. It’s surfie lingo for excellent, man. I suspect director Ben Wilson takes his intended audience a little too much for granted. Who are these Americans we meet at the beginning of the film? Why do they come to WA? And who decided that roughshod editing was cool? If you love the idea of really beautifully shot kite surfing footage then you won’t care about any of this, and there is a tonne of it here. But if you’re after even the slight sort of narrative that went along with the rides in The Endless Summer and even Morning of the Earth, you will be disappointed. I doubt Mr Wilson will care. One for mustard-keen surfie dudes everywhere.
