Movie Talk: The Godfather

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 7.30pm, Studio Host Peter Bart chats with Al Ruddy, producer of The Godfather, about the film’s birth pangs, its gestation period in development, its painful production process and the controversial editing. ‘‘ Peter, when I started The Godfather I was young and beautiful,’’ says Ruddy. ‘‘ Look at me, these are the ravages of doing that movie.’’ He is only half joking. Both men agree with the showbiz maxim that tortuous sets lead to great movies. ‘‘ When you’re happy on set you tend to be sloppy and lazy,’’ says Ruddy. ‘‘ That movie had everybody on set on edge, every minute.’’ This won’t be everybody’s cup of orange cordial. But for people who love movies, who care about how they are made and who want to learn from experts, it is unmissable.
