Storm Riders

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 10pm, A&E They track the meanest, deadliest storms on earth, including tornadoes, hurricanes and ice storms, says the earnest voiceover at the beginning of this program, which unfortunately has nothing whatsoever to do with the Doors. I’m guessing the practice isn’t that deadly because storm chaser Simon Brewer has been doing it for more than a decade. He has witnessed hundreds of tornadoes, eight hurricanes, two tropical storms, thousands of supercells and several partridges in pear trees. He and meteorological pal Juston Drake are described as hardcore meteorologists (isn’t that a bit like being a hardcore accountant?) who don’t rely on hi-tech gadgets, just a (mobile) phone and a map. Ah, but they may as well try and catch the wind, as Donovan Leitch used to sing.
