Live from Abbey Road: A Tribute to the Beatles

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Friday, 8.30pm, Studio Like a lot of television at this time of year, this celebrity run through of Abbey Road, at Abbey Road, has been shown pretty often since its debut in 2009. After a quick blast of each of the eight artists who perform 10 songs from the classic album (giving away any surprises to come, I fear), we cross to an interview with Beatles producer George Martin, who explains why the album, the last the group recorded, was a fitting tribute to the studio, which has made such a mark on recording. ‘‘ Everywhere I go, people are walking across zebra crossings in tribute to our album,’’ he says. Really George? You don’t think that, like chickens, they might just want to get to the other side? Cut to goons dressing up as the Beatles on the album cover in white suits and bare feet. Fortunately, we do not tarry. It’s virtually straight into Seal giving the engineers a few notes before applying his considerable vocal chops to the George Harrison standard Something.
