Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Friday, 7.30pm, Bio Does it seem slightly conceited to anyone else that the next anything can be found via a reality elimination series? Yes, Oprah Winfrey is a hugely powerful woman with enormous pull in the industry, so I suppose if anyone can find a new TV star, she can. It smacks, though, even after all the tedious name calling and blaming and shaming that goes on here, of a captain’s pick. So why not just give a talented person a show and be done with it? At least in Your Own Show we are spared the human cannon fodder of early episodes of musical challenges such as Idol and The Voice, where the self-deluded make fools of themselves for our pleasure. The 10 finalists arrived in last week’s debut pre-picked and packaged for success. Tonight just nine contestants remain. Naturally someone will be going home and there will be tears and triumphs. Admittedly this is from 2011, but isn’t it time such old-fashioned reality rubbish was consigned to the slagheap of history?
