Stephen Fry: Gadget Man

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 9.20pm, ABC1 My problem with Stephen Fry in his Gadget Man persona is that he seems constantly to be reinventing the wheel. Really, is there anyone alive who doesn’t know you can Skype people using a computer, a camera and a half-decent broadband connection? What a revelation. And how enchanting for us to watch and listen in as Fry Skypes his agent, or competes on mobile phones with Lord Sugar. ‘‘ Oh, dear oh dear,’’ says Sugar, who can’t work out how to change the camera on his phone from back to front view. Riveting. In each of the six episodes (this is the third) Fry also has a go at creating a super-gadget of his own. Remember the aquacab stalling in the Thames in episode one? Tonight our man is having an android made in his own image. Relaxing at home with a bag of chips while his android double presents an award at a technology conference, using his real time voice via WiFi, Fry tells us the future is here, or may be, in a couple of generations. But you knew that, right?
