Thurs­day, 8.30pm, Dis­cov­ery Though not a patch on Pro­hi­bi­tion, the mas­ter­ful Ken Burns doc­u­men­tary se­ries shown on SBS in Septem­ber, How Booze Built Amer­ica is none­the­less an in­ter­est­ing take on the na­tion-build­ing ca­pac­ity of booze. Hosted by Mike Rowe, Dis­cov­ery’s man for all sea­sons, it fea­tures a fourth-wall break­ing hu­mour that un­der­cuts the se­ri­ous­ness of the topic. We be­gin with a re-en­act­ment of Lex­ing­ton, one of the first bat­tles of the Amer­i­can Rev­o­lu­tion, in 1775. ‘‘ Th­ese men are fac­ing down 700 of the world’s best trained troops, even though we only had wardrobe for 20,’’ says Rowe.
