Her Majesty’s Prison: Ayles­bury

Tues­day, 9.30pm, ABC2 Prison doc­u­men­taries ex­cite an un­fath­omable pas­sion in tele­vi­sion ex­ec­u­tives. Most of the pro­grams that pro­lif­er­ate come from the US, where, at the end of 2011, the of­fi­cial national prison pop­u­la­tion was about 2.2 mil­lion with a fur­ther five mil­lion or so on pa­role. That’s a dif­fi­cult num­ber of lives to ig­nore. A point of dif­fer­ence here is that Her Majesty’s Prison Ayles­bury is in Bri­tain. This means a dif­fer­ent kind of prison (most Amer­i­can pris­ons are pri­va­tised) and an en­tirely dif­fer­ent style of doc­u­men­tary.
