Jane By Design

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Monday, 9.20pm, Fox8 Remember all that fascinating if patronising palaver by Meryl Streep as fashion publishing goddess Miranda Priestly in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada? Jane By Design dumbs the story down for teenagers. In the Streep role is Andie MacDowell (Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral ). She plays Gray Chandler Murray, a world-famous fashion designer at the Donovan Decker company. In the Anne Hathaway role is Erica Dasher, who plays titular character Jane Quimby. Instead of being a naive college graduate, Jane is a teenager who pretends to be a grown-up to wangle her way into a fashion dream job while she is still at high school. She triumphs, naturally, in each of her worlds. Fun at times, but a tad juvenile, with the emotional age dial set to about 15. In this episode Gray insists young Jane must fly to Paris to meet her in person with ‘‘ the book’’. I should mention that Jane By Design was cancelled recently, in case you were thinking of getting attached.
